In Summer 2010, 12 hackers/makers got together and rented a studio at Out of the Blue so that they could have somewhere to work, to keep equipment and to share with the rest of the community (apparently, having a milling machine on a coffee table in your lounge is okay for a bit but doesn’t work longer term unless you have understanding flatmates/partner).
Fast forward three years and Edinburgh Hacklab has grown to over 30 members. We’ve been building rafts, playing with Arduinos, laser cutting everything, making weird noises, drawing on mugs, and eating our collective weight in burritos. Our original home in Leith was bursting at the seams, at the beginning of this year we moved to Summerhall and now have three rooms of electronics, tools and stuff.
To mark our three year milestone the lab will be opening its doors for an open afternoon on Saturday 21st September from 2pm. Drop in, have a chat and see what we’ve been doing with our Raspberry Pis. The laser cutter will likely be breathing fire, if you have a cool project for us to lust over, bring it along for a bit of show and tell!
The party proper starts at 7pm. No doubt featuring some dubious digital DJing and a least one LED hat! There shall be cake and beer. So put the date in your diary and help us celebrate in style!
