Edinburgh Hacklab is part of the worldwide movement of Hackerspaces - Shared spaces for people who mess around with technology for fun.
The purposes of the Hacklab are:
- To promote and encourage technical, scientific and artistic skills, as well as innovation through individual projects, collaboration and education;
- To provide open events to allow the wider community to meet and socialise together;
- To promote and support the use and development of free and open technologies, standards, ideas, hardware and software for the benefit of all;
- To provide a shared physical workspace, tools, storage and other resources for its members;
- To work with other bodies with similar or complementary objectives.
Edinburgh Hacklab was launched on 24th August 2010 and is now based at Summerhall on the south side of Edinburgh. If you’d like to see or use the space, contact us or come to one of our open nights.
Who's in charge? Who looks after the place?
No one! Everyone!
Hacklab has a board of five directors who are nominally “in charge” but the board really exists to enact the membership's wishes. The directors look after some of the tedious bookkeeping and admin, but otherwise are no different from other members.
Hacklab has no paid employees, no technicians and definitely no cleaning staff. We need everyone to roll up their sleeves and help out. If members don't look after the space then it'll descend into a world of dirty mugs and broken tools.
How does becoming a member work?
We ask that people come and say hi a few times before applying for membership - either come to a few open nights, or ask someone to have you as a guest.
Once you've been around a bit, you can apply for membership in person or over email. 3 people will need to vouch for you. See here for more information on the whole process.
